Civil society protest against Quetta retired professor’s forceful eviction

The faculty members of the educational institutions and the civil society on Monday recorded their protest against the forceful eviction of retired professor Shagufta Iqbal and her family from government property by the police.

After Shagufta’s video went viral on social media, the former Government Girls College Jinnah Town principal alleged the police of throwing her belongings out of the government residence and harassing her and her children.

Her colleagues and former staff members joined the civil society held a protest in front of the Quetta Press Club in which they demanded those responsible for harassing Shagufta to face the full force of law.

“On the deputy commissioner’s order, the police have thrown out the belongings of retired professor Shagufta Iqbal without giving her respect and harassed her and her children,” the protesters said, demanding a stringent action against the culprits.

Shagufta claimed in her video, “I wasn’t served any notice asking me to leave the government residence. I don’t have any other place in Quetta to reside in but for all my services rendered in the education field, the government has gifted me insult.”

The protesters carrying placards with ‘justice for Shagufta’ written on them chanted slogans against the police and demanded of the Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo to take notice of the matter.

However, Quetta Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Abdul Razzaq Cheema maintained, “The retired professor lost her case of further extension in her stay in the honourable court, and the district administration had asked the police for help in evacuating the residence.”
