RAHIM YAR KHAN: A family was attacked over their refusal to give their two daughters as vani during a jirga in Rahim Yar Khan on Sunday morning.
The jirga put a fine of Rs0.8 million on a man with whom a woman had married out of her own choice. The case was brought by the woman’s family. The man was also ordered to hand over his two sisters as vani.
After the family of the man refused to hand over their daughters, they were attacked and their crops were set on fire. Police have conducted raids to arrest suspects after a case was registered against 34 people over crop fires. The police said they will offer protection to the married couple but denied any knowledge of the jirga.
The vani tradition often requires females to be handed over to the opposing group in order to settle a dispute.
A similar case led a woman named Aasia to commit suicide on March 17 in Ubauro, Ghotki. Aasia poisoned herself and her parents after she was coerced to be made vani over her brother’s decision to marry a woman of his choice. The parents are currently hospitalised over the poisoning.
A jirga had decided that Aasia must marry a man from her brother’s in-law’s and enforced a fine of Rs1 million on her brother.
