CJP Nisar says suo motu notices providing relief to masses

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Friday vowed to continue taking suo motu notices over matters of public interest, rubbishing criticism over the frequency of his notices saying that no work was done in the country until he took notice of the issue.

“No work is done unless I take suo motu notice,” he said while hearing a case. He added that he takes notices for the sake of public welfare.

The CJP reiterated that he took suo motu notices over the issues involving violation of basic human rights such as the provision of clean water, education and healthcare facilities.

The chief justice said he ensured the return of Rs10 million to students of a private college by taking a suo motu notice. He said that protests were held against him, but he will continue working for the welfare of people.

The chief justice had earlier said that he failed to comprehend why judges take four years to decide civil cases.

“I acknowledge that we don’t have the right to amend the obsolete laws of British rule,” he said, asked the judges to dispense fair justice using the laws in hand.

He said they knew that they didn’t have required resources and neither was the government extending cooperation as such.

Earlier in the year, CJP stated that is incumbent on the judiciary to protect the basic rights of people and emphasised on the provision of affordable and expeditious access to justice to those seeking the same through courts.

CJP reaffirmed his commitment to the principles of freedom and justice and said that members of bar and bench need to be equally cognizant of their responsibilities towards the marginalised sections of the society.
