Private schools in KP barred from increasing fees: report

PESHAWAR: Private educational institutes have been directed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Private Schools Regulatory Authority (PSRA) on Tuesday to avoid increasing tuition fees until a consistent policy is developed and administered, a local media outlet reported on Tuesday.

According to the circular, no institution/management of private schools shall charge the tuition fee during vacations.

The notice provided to the media said that neither annual nor tuition fees could be increased until a PSRA could present its fee policy and that regulations for private schools have now been uploaded online.
However, the PSRA acknowledged the financial difficulties schools may face due to operating expenditures, and allowed private schools’ management to charge not more tan 50% of tuition fee in addition the annual charges.

“There shall be complete ban on charging students for transport charges during vacations. The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has authorised/directed the traffic police department, to de-board any student of any private institution who is hanging outside any private vehicle and shall charge the class teacher, school principal and the owner of the school,” read the PSRA notice.

“Likewise, the in-charge police station of each locality where the school located is authorized to register a case against the school administration/principal, who violates the judgment and charge the extra than the annual fee and transport fee etc,” it added.

The private schools have also been directed to provide transport guidance to the students after the PHC’s judgement.

“All private institutions shall abide by the regulations of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Safe Food and Halal Food Authority regarding canteens even inside the premises of institutions, with weekly inspection of the food item by the competent food inspector etc. with complete ban on outside items,” read the notice.
