KARACHI: Local police on Tuesday arrested an alleged ‘serial rapist’, who they claim was involved in five rape cases.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) East Zulfiqar Larik in a press conference here claimed that they had arrested a serial rapist, involved in five rape cases.

Larik said that the investigation suggests that the alleged rapist belongs to Punjab’s Jhang district. He has been living in Karachi for past five years and working in a cloth factory. He was arrested for his involvement in five rape cases, and two mobile phones with 10 sim cards were recovered from him, he told the media.

The DIG claimed that two rape cases were lodged against him in 2015 and 2017, one each year,  at Quaidabad police station in which it was reported that two girls aged between 7 and 8 year old were raped.

The DIG said that on the directives of Inspector General Police AD Khowaja, they formed a special investigation team headed by Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Malir Javed Akbar Riaz who carried a detailed probe and conducted DNA tests of rape cases from Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS) Hyderabad. The results suggested that same accused was involved in all five rapes cases, he claimed.

He said that accused also belongs to a street criminals’ gang and has Rs300000 in his bank accounts.

The DIG, however, said that the accused might be involved in more rape cases as there are 20 other rape cases pending for DNA tests

The DIG requested the citizens to cooperate with police in such cases so that this curse could be eliminated.
