GHOTKI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Friday stated that PPP is the only political party in the country that cares for the well-being of the poor and accused the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of introducing a new tax amnesty scheme that only serves the rich.

Speaking at a gathering in Ghotki, the PPP chairman said that rival parties were involved in the politics that benefit the rich. In a reference to the PML-N government’s tax scheme, Bilawal said, “Such tax amnesty schemes are introduced for the wealthy to exempt them from giving taxes and paying their debts.”

He further alleged that the party’s opponents were handing over state-owned companies, such as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), to their close aides.

“Our opponents are snatching PIA and PSM and giving them to their friends and close aides,” he said.

Regarding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, the PPP chairman said, “On one hand, Imran Khan is speaking against corruption, while on the other, he roams around with people accused of massive corruption.”

He also said that Imran Khan voted for PPP in the Senate elections despite saying he would not.

“Imran Khan only indulges in politics of lies. He said he would not vote for PPP in Senate elections but voted for our candidate for the position of Senate deputy chairman,” the PPP chairman said while addressing the media in Mirpur Mathelo.

Responding to a question, Bilawal said the post of Karachi’s mayor and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) were under the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). “MQM leaders are now fighting amongst each other and have neglected their duties altogether,” he added.

He further said, “Everyone knows who was behind politics of violence in Karachi and the first time, the people of the port city would feel free to elect candidates of their own choice.”

Bilawal also alleged that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was harming democracy in an attempt to cover his faults. However, he said, “Democracy is not in danger.”
