ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Friday appointed Lt Gen (r) Nadeem Ahmed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) in sheer violation of the set rules.
A notification issued by Ministry of Finance Economic Affairs Division stated that in pursuance of the cabinet decision dated March 28, 2018, Lt Gen (r) Nadeem Ahmed has been appointed as Chief Executive officer, National Disaster Risk Fund (NDRMF), a public limited company set up under section 42 of the companies ordinance, 1984, with immediate effect for a period of two years.
“The remuneration and other terms and conditions shall apply as per NADRMF’s Human Resource Management Manual and public sector companies (Cooperate Governance) rules 2013 issued by Securities Exchange Commission of Pakistan,” the notification further stated.
The notification mentioned that the federal cabinet had given the approval of the appointment on March 28, 2018.
The Supreme Court had directed the government not to appoint any person above the age of sixty-five. Sources told that Ahmed was sixty-seven years old which violated the order.
This is directly a contempt case, the sources stated.
In recent past, the government has made several appointments in different departments, including Auditor General of Pakistan, and others relating to State Bank of Pakistan, Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) and others.
The government had established NDRMF with the help of Asian Development Bank in 2015 but the said company has not been operational despite the passage of over two years.
Lt Gen (r) Nadeem Ahmed retired as Mari Petroleum CEO in January 2018. Sources claimed that he started lobbying for the post after retirement and maintained close ties with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
He held the portfolio of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) chairman from 2010 to 2011.
