In a first, Punjab to get police public school

LAHORE: The Punjab police will now have its first-ever police public school, the funds for which have been approved by the Board of Revenue at Rs 74.4 million.

A 12 Kanal plot in Harbanspura will be used for the school and a letter has been issued to Punjab Police Inspector General (IGP) Captain (r) Arif Nawaz Khan notifying him about the deposition of funds.

Close to 1,000 students would be provided with education and children whose parents are currently serving, retired or martyred as policemen would be exempt from expenses, said DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf.

“As far as the welfare of the force is concerned, this step is of prime importance,” he said. “Our policemen are unable to afford the exorbitant school fees of private schools. This leads them to withdraw their children from such institutions or force them to adopt unsavoury practices to support their families,” he explained.

Recently, Qila Gujjar Singh saw the establishment of a police welfare hospital which provides free medical facilities to policemen and their families.

“These steps were meant to improve the welfare of the force. Without the welfare of the force, changing the thana culture would remain a distant dream,” DIG Ashraf said.
