ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) rejected a plea seeking the transfer of rights activist Mehr Abdul Sattar, working with peasants of Okara district, from a high-security prison in Sahiwal to Okara district jail, reported a local English newspaper.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, rejected the petition against a 2017 order of Lahore High Court (LHC), which kept the Punjab government’s decision to shift Sattar from the Okara jail to Sahiwal prison. The court, however, ruled that the trial could be held inside the jail.

The petition was filed by the activists, represented by late lawyer Asma Jahangir, requesting the top court to suspend Mehr Sattar’s chains and to provide him security against inhumane treatment in the prison.
