KARACHI: Former Malir SSP Rao Anwar on Thursday moved the apex court against the constitution of a new Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the Naqeebullah Mehsud ‘encounter’ case ordered by the Supreme Court (SC).
Chaudry Akhtar Ali, who submitted the review petition on behalf of Rao Anwar, has appealed for the removal of Sindh AIG Aftab Pathan as the JIT head besides, requesting that intelligence officials be included in the team.
The review petition, filed by Chaudry Akhtar Ali on behalf of Anwar, seeks the removal of Sindh Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Aftab Pathan as the JIT head and requests the inclusion of intelligence officials in the team.
In the petition, the disgraced senior superintendent police (SSP) has claimed that not only is the Sindh Police is ‘twisting facts’ but also, the ‘opinion rendered on the case is by the “same officer who had earlier supervised the investigation’.
The constitution of a five-member JIT team presided over by Sindh AIG Aftab Pathan and comprising of Zulfiqar Larak, Azad Ahmed Khan and Waliullah had only been ordered by the chief justice a few days ago on March 21.
While investigators have failed to prove any of the charges against Rao, the disgraced SSP has blamed his subordinates for staging fake encounters.
It has been reported that the investigation team has been questioning Anwar on the whereabouts of his team members.
