ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday accepted the objections over delimitation of constituencies in Punjab’s Kasur district.

The decision was announced on objections over delimitation of new constituencies, including NA-137, NA-138, PP-174, PP-175, PP-180, PP-181 and PP-182 in Kasur. Hearing over the constituencies of Shikarpur district in Sindh is still underway.

A day earlier, ECP announced its decision on objections related to PK-28 and PK-29 constituencies of Battagram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to ECP, it has so far received 1,286 objections on the delimitation of the constituencies throughout the country.

The objections were received from Islamabad, Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The process of accepting objections on delimitation from citizens throughout the country would continue up to April 24.

On Tuesday, ECP Spokesperson Haroon Shinwari had said that efforts were being made to create an issue out of the delimitation of new constituencies. Speaking to a private news channel, he had said that this was not the first time that they had been delimiting constituencies.

Shinwari had said that the entire nation had its expectations from them and they would stand up to those expectations. He had highlighted that ECP had been working on the delimitation of new constituencies for the past one-and-half year, besides the ongoing training of its employees.

“Those objecting to the delimitation of new constituencies must have some personal issue,” the spokesman had said.

Earlier, ECP had said that it had so far received 729 objections on the delimitation of constituencies throughout the country. Out of the total objections, 368 objections were received from Punjab and Islamabad, 188 from Sindh, 71 from Balochistan and 102 from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

ECP had established a facilitation centre at ECP Secretariat for the submission of objections and for facilitating the people regarding the initial delimitation of national and provincial assemblies. Five teams had been constituted to receive the objections pertaining to all four provinces, federation and FATA in the office hours.

The commission had also launched the details of objections on the proposed delimitation of the constituencies for 2018 along with proposed maps by the petitioners on its website for public convenience and transparency.

ECP had said that this facility would be helpful to all stakeholders to understand and get informed about the current status and the ongoing activities regarding the delimitation of constituencies.
