JALALABAD: At least two militants of Islamic State (IS) were killed and three others injured following an Afghan army’s clearance operation in the country’s restive eastern province of Nangarhar, according to a defense ministry statement released on Thursday.

The operation was launched in Ghulamdag village of Chaparhar district of the province Wednesday, leaving two Daesh or IS members dead and some arms and ammunition as well as two motorcycles seized, the defense ministry said.

A car bomb was also found and safely detonated by the army’s bomb disposal team during the above raid, it said.

The mountainous province of Nangarhar, 120 km east of Kabul, has been the scene of clashes between security forces and IS militants from time to time.

The clashes have forced thousands of villagers to flee to safer places.

The IS group, which emerged in Nangarhar in early 2015, has yet to make comments on the report.
