LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Malik Taimoor Masood on Wednesday submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly (PA) seeking a ban on the use of word talaaq (divorce) in television dramas.

The lawmaker said that the word affects the society negatively and urged the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to ban the word from the entertainment TV channels.

The resolution submitted states that the use of the word is unfavourably looked upon in the Pakistani society and should be banned from being used in the dramas.

The resolution, however, does not suggest what alternative word should be used in its place if a storyline requires so, and neither does it specify the demerits of the usage of the word.

Earlier in 2016, Taimoor Masood had submitted a similar resolution in the Punjab Assembly calling for a ban on the famous Japanese anime series Doraemon.

Masood had urged the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to impose a ban on Doraemon or limit its airtime as it contains explicit content which inappropriate for children.

According to the legislator, 24-hour cartoon channels had an adverse effect on the educational and physical growth of children and claimed that the language used in cartoons was against the societal norms.
