Positive progress achieved regarding Myanmar’s Rakhine state: advisory board

SINGAPORE: Positive developments have been achieved in implementing the recommendations on Myanmar’s Rakhine state, an advisory board to the implementation committee said here Tuesday.

The Advisory Board to the Committee for the Implementation of the Recommendations on Rakhine State, led by Chairman Surakiart Sathirathai, held a press conference here after their second session in Yangon from March 31 to April 1.

Achievements included that implementation of 57 of Kofi Annan’s recommendations have been completed, the advisory board noted.

Moreover, some IDP (internally displaced person) camps in Rakhine have been closed and the people resettled, with the authorities promising that more will be closed.

The Myanmar government also agreed to receive a delegation from the United Nations Security Council and neighboring countries.

The advisory board also urged the Myanmar government to double their efforts regarding the IDP camps to encourage the refugees in the border camps to return.
