ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday sought a reply from the federal government within 15 days on a petition regarding the construction of Kalabagh Dam.
Kalabagh Dam is a proposed hydroelectric dam on the Indus River, which, if constructed would have 3,600 megawatts electricity generation capacity.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar took up the plea filed by Barrister Zafarullah Khan of Watan Party.
During the hearing, Justice Umar Ata Bandial observed that there was no doubt that the dam should be constructed but provinces are yet to reach a consensus on this issue.
Earlier in 2016, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea of Engineers Forum about the construction of Kalabagh Dam.
A three-member bench headed by then-chief justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali disposed of the case saying that the construction was postponed due to technical grounds.
The court further remarked that the issue of Kalabagh Dam was being politicised and that three provinces are not in favour of its construction.
The court also stated that it will not interfere in policy matters as no one’s right is undermined whether the dam is constructed or not.

I have worked in Tarbela Dam since 1965 till 1976,elven years.kala Bag and Tarbela were one scheme designed by M/s TAMS.KBD WAS the main. Dam while was for silt retention and its life was for fifty years ,after which it will be rendered un service able due to excessive silt deposite, the down steam Dam would serve as the main reservoir for empounding, flood regulation, power generation.and irrigatjion perposes.
KPK objection about the water logging and back flow due to floods jin Kabul river are base less,
1.the distance is more than 100 km down stfreams of Nowshehra and Charsada.
2 the water logging occurs down stream of dam about more than 100 miles in Bannu or Di khan.,and not upstreams of the structure.
