SRK’s fanboy moment with Christopher Nolan

MUMBAI: Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan was happy to meet acclaimed film-maker Christopher Nolan in Mumbai.

“My fanboy moment. Inspiring to hear Nolan and Tacita Dean talk of the virtues of celluloid as an artist’s medium,” Shah Rukh tweeted.

Nolan is regarded as one of the most influential film-makers of the 21st century with like Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk to his credit.

Work and love for cinema has brought him to the country. Nolan is in India to draw attention to the importance of celluloid in the digital age.

While at an event, Nolan said that he is interested to watch and know more about Indian cinema.

When asked if he has watched any Indian films, the film-maker replied, “I have watched some Indian cinema, just not enough though. But I enjoyed the films a lot and would love to watch more of them.”

“One of the reasons I am in India is to meet more people from the Indian film industry. I want to engage with the people from one of the greatest film culture of the world and learn more about it,” added Nolan.

Being an iconic film-maker and using high-end technology, supporting the celluloid film is quite a traditional thought. Asked about how he reconciles these two, Nolan said, “Film is a medium used to tell a story so you can use whatever technology you want.”

The director explained, “For example in Dunkirk, we tried to tell the story in an ambitious way. We used interesting structural techniques and approaches.”

Born in 1970 in London, Nolan had a keen interest in storytelling which eventually transformed into his aspiration to become a professional film-maker. At the tender age of seven, he used his father’s camera to make short films. At the age of eight, Nolan, who was highly influenced by watching Star Wars made a stop motion animation called Space Wars.

It is fascinating to observe how the man with so well-versed with use of modern technology, living in a digital era of 21st century, does not use social media and cell phones which otherwise are a part of every global citizen.

When questioned on what made him stop using social media, Nolan answered, “I am not really interested in social media. We may live in a digital age but we are also living in an analogue world. One of the interesting things about celluloid film is that it has a very good relationship with the real life.”

Indian film-maker and archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), is hosting Nolan at a three-day event ‘Reframing the Future of Film’ here from March 30 to April 1. Celebrated visual artist Tacita Dean will also be part of it.

Shah Rukh also thanked Dungarpur for making him a part of this initiative. Nolan will also be present for the screenings of two of his recent films – Oscar-nominated Dunkirk and Interstellar.

The Hollywood director, who had previously come to India to shoot The Dark Knight Rises in Jodhpur back in 2011, is expected to fly out on April 2.
