Government reinstates three officials alleged of registering 90 smuggled vehicles

KARACHI: The Sindh government finally on Saturday reinstated three powerful officers of the Excise and Taxation Department, who were earlier suspended on the recommendation of Customs Intelligence (CI), for their massive involvement in the registration of smuggled luxury vehicles, Pakistan Today learned.

Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department Secretary Abdul Haleem Shaikh issued a notification SO(ADMN-I)E&T/4(280)(p-I) reinstating three powerful officials.

The insiders told the scribe that the excise and taxation department had suspended 10 of its officials on the CI’s recommendation. The officials included Excise and Taxation Officers (ETO)  Mumtaz Ali Mirani, AH Siddiqui, Kashif Muhammad, Sharif Ali, Ali Akbar, Muhammad Amin, Kashif Soomro and Mansoor Haleem, and Assistant Excise and Taxation Officers Karamullah Kalwar and Nisar Ahmed Shehwani.

According to sources, these officers were suspended upon the recommendation of the intelligence for their alleged involvement in issuing fake registration documents for smuggled vehicles.

Earlier, the Customs authorities in Karachi had seized over 90 smuggled luxury vehicles and during interrogation, it was revealed that some officials of excise department with the help of smuggler mafia used to submit fake documents of customs clearance in the registration department.

After the enquiry report, the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence Director Karachi director had approached the Sindh government for taking stern action against these officials, upon which the secretary suspended 10 officials and had initiated the further investigations.

The notification available with Pakistan Today states, “The services of Karamullah Kalwar, Nisar Ahmed Shehwani, Assistant Excise and Taxation Officer (BS-16) and Mumtaz Ali Mirani, Excise and Taxation Inspector (BS-14) placed under suspension vide this department’s notification of even number dated 30.11.2017 are hereby reinstated pending finalization of departmental proceeding/enquiry with immediate effect and until further orders.”

“On reinstatement, Nisar Ahmed Shehwani has been posted as Director (Excise) T&NC Karachi, Karamullah Kalwar as AETO district Malir (Excise) Karachi and Mumtaz Ali Mirani as Director, the notification further added.
