KARACHI: Following the apex court’s directives, Sindh Police on late Thursday night appointed District Central SSP Dr Mohammad Rizwan Ahmed Khan as the investigating officer (IO) of the newly-formed Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing allegations against former SSP Rao Anwar in the Naqeebullah murder case.
SSP Investigation Central Dr Rizwan replaced Malir SSP Abid Qaimkhani as the new investigation officer.
So far, the new JIT has been unable to find the personnel who aided and assisted Anwar to escape and remain in hiding.
On Thursday, an anti-terrorism court in Karachi sent the suspended Malir SSP to police custody till April 21 for filing a false case against Naqeebullah Mehsud, who was killed in a fake encounter in Karachi.
On March 21, Rao Anwar, who had been absconding in the Naqeebullah Mehsud’s extra-judicial murder case for a month, appeared before the Supreme Court (SC) after which the top court ordered police to take the suspended Karachi police official into custody.
Appearing before the bench, Anwar’s counsel had sought protective bail from the court but Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar had dismissed the plea and gave orders for his arrest.
Chief Justice Nisar had expressed dismay at Anwar’s continuous absence despite repeated summons by the apex court.
The chief justice had also ordered the formation of a joint investigation team (JIT) headed by Sindh Additional IG Aftab Pathan. Other members include Zulfiqar Larak, Dr Rizwan, Azad Ahmed Khan and Wali Ullah.
