Man gets two life terms for killing free-will couple

LAHORE: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Thursday handed a man two life terms for his involvement in honour killing of a couple who had eloped.

The accused, Mehboob, after being found guilty was handed two terms of life imprisonment and fined Rs0.5 million by Judge Sajjad Ahmad.

The prosecution told the court that Mehboob, the third convict in the case, was involved in the killing of Lubna and Mohsin, the eloped couple. The couple was assassinated in 2014 on their way to the court.

Punjab police registered a case against Mehboob, maternal uncle of Lubna, and two others in Muridke, Punjab. Two other convicts, cousins of Lubna, have already been given death sentences by the court.

A number of women are murdered in the name of honour across Pakistan, even after implementation of new laws more than a year ago.

The legislation mandates life in jail for honour killing, but whether a murder can be categorised as a crime of honour is left to the discretion of the judge.
