ECP issues notices to Hamza Shahbaz, other PML-N leaders

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday issued notices to Hamza Shahbaz and other leaders of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) over violation of the electoral code of conduct.

During the hearing of a case regarding violation of the ECP conduct in the constituency PP-20 Chakwal, the counsel of PML-N’s MPA Sultan Haider appeared before the commission.

He pleaded that Hamza Shahbaz had come to inaugurate a marriage hall adjacent to the constituency, reasoning that Imran Khan had addressed a public meeting which was ignored by the monitoring team.

Haider did not pay the fine within three days and his counsel had challenged it. Moreover, the ECP accepted his appeal against the imposition of the fine.

ECP also issued notices to Tahir Iqbal, Sardar Zulfiqar and Chaudhry Khurshid Baig for violating the electoral code of conduct.

On the other hand, a 4-member bench of the ECP – presided by Abdul Ghaffar Soomro – took up the hearing of case pertaining to the alleged fake affidavit of PTI’s Aleem Khan on Wednesday where the Aleem’s counsel told the commission that an intra-court appeal had been filed in Lahore High Court (LHC) and its hearing would take place on April 2. This case should not be decided before the LHC decision, the counsel argued

He further said that a copy of the reply filed by Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, speaker of National Assembly (NA), was not provided to them. The commission, while directing to provide a copy of the reply to counsel for Aleem Khan, adjourned the hearing till May 8.
