KARACHI: The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) established to investigate allegations against suspended SSP Malir Rao Anwar has failed to trace officials who assisted the police official in escaping arrest.
Anwar, the prime suspect in the Naqeebullah murder case, surrendered before Supreme Court (SC) last week, and is currently on a 30-day physical remand in Karachi.
According to sources, the members of JIT could not question Anwar properly hence remained unable to find the individuals who helped him. The major reason for limited interrogation from the ex-SSP was the final of Pakistan Super League in Karachi as its security was the main focus of law enforcement agencies in last few days. Now, the team is ready to investigate him fully.
Earlier, Investigation Officer (IO) SSP Abid Kaimkhani submitted his report to the top court containing the investigation, challan file and a video statement of a witness. Based on the provided material, it was proved that Anwar was not only involved in the killing of the 27-year-old Waziristan native but also of staging a fake police encounter which led to the killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud and four others.
Not only Anwar was informed about the encounter but he was also present at the site, the witness head constable Shehzad Jahangir said in his video statement.
In the video, Jahangir further said on the evening of January 13, he received a call from former Station House Officer (SHO) of Shah Latif, Amanullah Marwat, asking him to come to Shedi Khan Goth area of Karachi. When he reached the site, Marwat along with head constable Mohsin Abbas, constables Raja Shamim, Rana Riaz, Shakeel, Bahadur, and Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Gada Hussain was already present.
After 10 minutes, Anwar, former SHO of Sohrab Goth Shoaib Arif ‘Shooter’ and ASI Khair Muhammad reached in a convoy of bulletproof cars, police mobiles and private cars. The bulletproof cars were stopped at the entrance of the farmhouse and five hooded men walked out of them.
They were brought inside the farm and after few minutes rounds of gunshots were heard, Jahangir recalled, adding after that the police officials including Rao Anwar and former Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Qamar Ahmed Sheikh started filling the paperwork regarding the killed men.
Later, media and ambulances also reached the site, where Anwar and Qamar briefed media about the killing of four Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) terrorists, Jahangir stated, adding that Anwar and Qamar were actively involved in the killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud and four others.
