ISLAMABAD: In an unprecedented development, a management post-graduate and son of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) chairman has joined militant ranks to fight for freedom of Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK).

According to reports emerging from Srinagar, Junaid Ashraf Khan Sehrai, the youngest son of the chief Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, joined the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen in Srinagar on Saturday.

Junaid’s decision to join Hizbul Mujahideen comes on the heels of his father’s elevation as new chairman of TeH after veteran Kashmiri leader and Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani stepped down last week. Sehrai is an old associate of Geelani and a seasoned basic member of Jamaat-e-Islami.

According to the Srinagar Police officials, Junaid Ahmad Khan, 26, a resident of Jehangir Colony in Srinagar’s Baghat area, went missing Friday afternoon from his home, after which Junaid’s elder brother lodged a missing person report with the police.

“Junaid’s family has lodged a missing report after his brother Rashid Ashraf Khan arrived at the police station Saturday afternoon and told us that his younger brother [Junaid Khan] went missing yesterday,” a police official from Saddar Police Station, Srinagar, told reporters.

The family, as per the police official, has stated in the report that Junaid went for Friday prayers and had told his family that he will return in the evening after repairing his mobile phone at Lal Chowk, the city’s centre.

However, a picture of Junaid went viral on social networking websites Saturday morning reflecting the youth holding an assault rifle. The message with the picture suggested that Junaid had joined Hizbul Mujahideen outfit.  Police have also confirmed the development.
