ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Azam Swati on Saturday stated that his party is forming an ‘independent opposition bloc’ to rival Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led by Sherry Rehman in the Senate.

Swati told media that PTI is in contact with Jamaat-e-Islami (JIT), independent senators from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) to form the alliance.

PTI did not support Sherry Rehman for Senate opposition leader’s office, stating that it will damage the reputation of the party. Both parties, however, voted for Sadiq Sanjrani, an independent candidate from Balochistan, to beat Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s Raja Zafarul Haq.

Swati, who was nominated for Senate opposition leader by PTI, further said that the party has established a strategy to counter PPP. He, however, did not mention how this alliance will work inside the Upper House.

The PTI leader said that his party will raise voice against ‘rampant corruption in Sindh by PPP’, adding that both PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif are responsible for Pakistan’s current situation.

“I and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak will visit Karachi in coming days,” Swati said.
