CJ Nisar stops his convoy to hear a crying mother’s plea

LAHORE: The motorcade of Supreme Court (SC) judges on Saturday was stopped by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJ) Mian Saqib Nasir outside the SC registry to hear the plea of a crying mother.

The CJ himself along with Justice Ijazul Hasan were leaving the registry for Jinnah Hospital when family members of a young man – allegedly killed in a fake encounter by the Gujranwala Police in 2008 – surrounded his motorcade, protesting against the killing.

Taking note of the protest, Justice Nisar halted the convoy and stepped out of the vehicle to inquire the reason behind the wailing mother’s commotion.

The personnel deployed for the dignitaries’ security tried to keep the woman away from the apex court judges when CJ Nisar ordered them to step aside and let the woman speak

“Only you can give me justice,” she said to the chief justice.

Hearing her plea, CJ Nisar directed the court staff to fix a hearing at 11 am on Sunday (today) at the SC registry.

It is pertinent to note that shortly after her son’s death, Sughran Bibi, a resident of Khayali, had submitted a case against 21 people for torturing her son to death. She had named two army majors, a local station house officer (SHO) and other police officials in her complaint.

The court had sent six accused, including two majors to jail. However, in January 2011, Sughran Bibi and the witnesses changed their statements saying that Zulfikar died after a fall. Reports claimed that the woman received Rs2,400,000 in blood money to drop the charges against the culprits.
