ISLAMABAD: Former Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar on Thursday warned Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif to rein in his daughter Maryam Nawaz as her “sharp tongue” was pushing the party towards a dead end.

A staunch PML-N stalwart, Nisar drifted away from the ruling party last year after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified from his post by the Supreme Court (SC). He said that he was absent from national politics for the time being because of his involvement in constituency level politics.

The former minister also said that it was disappointing that he was being made a target of personal attacks that originated from a specific source.

“These attacks take the form of jokes and sarcastic statements on most occasions. My name is also wrongfully associated with certain events that never happened in an attempt to mock my identity,” he said.

Directing his remarks at unknown persons inside PML-N, Nisar said that pawns could be easily identified through their political or ideological association, adding that a puppeteer decides when to make a puppet dance.

He said that he reacted to the events of last year by exercising “extreme patience”.

“When my distractors could not find any issues to muddy my name, they appointed journalists to ask me ridiculous and mocking questions,” he added.

Nisar also directed his remarks at Nawaz Sharif and said that only God could bestow favours on others. “If you are under the impression that you alone have given favours to people, then the people who gave you favours might have crossed your mind too. These same people have elevated you to the position that you occupy today, and you should be thankful and grateful to them,” he added.

“Maryam Nawaz is steering the party towards disaster because of her sharp tongue. Her misbehaviour could be responded to in the same manner by me, but I refuse to so out of respect for the Sharif family,” Nisar continued.

He also warned pawns to stop hurling baseless allegation against him, or else he would be left with no choice but to issue a detailed clarification regarding some issues.

Nisar’s statement had come just days after he hinted towards issuing a public clarification in connection with his strained relationship with PML-N during a press conference in Taxila.
