4th Inter-Provincial Games: Punjab grabs 35 medals on first two days

PESHAWAR: The Punjab Sports Board (PSB) contingent stole the show and grabbed 35 medals during the first two days of the 4th Inter-Provincial Games in Peshawar.

According to information made available here on Monday, Punjab’s weightlifting team showed brilliant performance and clinched all the four gold medals on the second day of the games.

Sharjeel Butt got a gold medal in 56 kg category, Abdul Hannan in 62 kg, Asjad Jameel in 69 kg and Arslan Hanif in 77 kg. The Punjab wrestling team also showed their prowess and took 4 gold medals. The tug-of-war team clinched solitary gold, while Punjab volleyball team also bagged a silver medal.

Earlier, on the opening day of the games, the PSB contingent won 24 medals including 19 gold. Punjab’s men’s rowing and women wushu teams stamped their superiority very early in the grand event winning 7 and 5 gold medals, respectively. Punjab ju-jitsu athletes also got seven gold medals.

Punjab Sports Minister Jahangir Khanzada and Punjab Sports Secretary Muhammad Aamir Jan congratulated their provinces contingent for an overwhelming performance.

They urged the players to offer improved performances in the remaining competitions of the grand event. Punjab Olympic Association (POA) Secretary Idris Haider Khawaja expressed his delight on the performance of Punjab too. “We will return as winners from the mega event,” he said.

In the ju-jitsu contest, Ghulam Majeed, Umer Mukhtar and Ahmed Ali took gold medals in 56 kg, 69 kg and 77 kg class competitions, while Mohsin Ali secured bronze in 62 kg category. In the show system event, Shahzaib and Rafiq won a gold medal for Punjab, while Rafiq and Hamza were content with silver in the duo system event.
