ISLAMABAD: Imran Khan claimed on Friday that the Sharif family made itself rich through kickbacks received from the Multan Metro Bus and other such projects, adding that it was never aimed for the betterment of people.

Taking to Twitter, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief criticised the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and said, “What I also saw and what was confirmed to me by the people of Multan yesterday was the fact that the Multan Metro project, like the other Metros, was to enrich the Sharifs through huge kickbacks rather than for the benefit of the people of Multan.”

He called the metro bus project “a white elephant” and stressed that there are “hardly any buses & even fewer passengers”.

Imran Khan said, “The project will need major subsidies to survive. Clear the project was for kickbacks going into offshore accounts not for people.”

On Thursday, the chairman of PTI had as part of the Punjab-wide membership drive. He had earlier visited Faisalabad, Gujrat, Jhelum, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahab.

He had stressed, during his address, that the Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif had launched the metro bus to make money. “People need hospitals, clean water and good universities,” Imran said, adding that making the metro bus in Multan was akin to giving a motorcycle to a patient who is lying in hospital and needs medicines.  “You are a big fraud Shehbaz,” he stated.
