ISLAMABAD: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered a case against the former ambassador and diplomat Hussain Haqqani for alleged embezzlements in secret funds and misusing his authority during his stint as envoy to the United States.
Haqqani, who was also the centre of Memogate scandal, has been booked under 4, 409, and 109 of Pakistan Penal Code by FIA’s anti-corruption wing.
According to the sources, the case against former ambassador will assist the federal government to get him arrested through Interpol.
Earlier, FIA sent an application to Interpol regarding the arrest of Haqqani after Supreme Court issued his arrest warrants in Memogate scandal.
A three-member bench of the top court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar ordered that Hussain Haqqani should be brought back to Pakistan through Interpol.
In 2012, a judicial committee probed the Memogate scandal and submitted its report to the apex court, holding Haqqani guilty of preparing the memo and called his act as disloyal to the country.
Haqqani allegedly wrote a memo in 2011 to the top official of the US Army at that time, Admiral Mike Mullen, seeking the help of Obama administration in the wake of the Osama Bin Laden killing to avert a military takeover of civilian government in Pakistan, as well as assisting in a civilian takeover of the government and military apparatus.
