Shahid Masood to be punished as per law, CJP says

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday observed that TV anchorperson Shahid Masood, who made startling claims about the Zainab rape and murder case, will be punished as per the law.

In his programme on a private news channel, Masood claimed that main accused in Zainab case, Imran Ali, maintained over 37 bank accounts, mostly foreign currency denominated, with transactions in dollars, euros and pounds sterling.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar made the remarks during the hearing of suo moto notice of the anchorperson’s claims.

As the hearing resumed, the top court dismissed the response of Shahid Masood and remarked that time for apologising is over. “The anchor should have realised his responsibility,” Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked.

The chief justice also observed that the court will decide whether this case falls under the jurisdiction of Anti-Terrorism Act or not.

The chief justice then asked the attorney general for how long Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) can ban a channel for such violation.

The hearing was adjourned for a week, as the court ordered the attorney general to submit his response on next hearing.

During the hearing, On March 7, the top court had warned Masood to submit his objections to Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report laying bogus claims regarding Imran Ali.

On March 1, the JIT submitted its report to the apex court and dismissed all allegations made by the anchorperson regarding the high-profile case.
