PESHAWAR/LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Sirajul Haq on Tuesday demanded the Supreme Court (SC) take an oath from the newly elected senators and heads of all political parties, including Asif Ali Zardari, Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan, that they have not indulged in horse-trading in the Senate elections.

Talking to reporters after presiding over a meeting of the JI provincial advisory council in Peshawar, Sirajul Haq said it was an irony that our police mistreated poor taxi drivers but spared those indulging in the corruption of billions of rupees. He said that Pakistan could not be put on the path of progress and prosperity until it elected an honest and revolutionary leadership.

He said that besides financial corruption, moral corruption was also rampant in the country. He questioned whether action had been taken against those who took part in horse-trading in the recently concluded Senate elections.

The JI chief further said that according to the World Bank survey, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) was the poorest province in the country. He said that electricity generation in the province was more than the demand, yet there was darkness all around the province, adding the federal government was a total failure.

He also said there were vast reserves of oil and gas in KP, but these were not being explored properly by the government. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had offered greatest sacrifices in the war on terror but nobody was ready to acknowledge their losses.

Siraj said that the government was making a mockery of the constitution by not holding the National Financial Commission meeting.

Meanwhile, JI Secretary General Liaqat Baloch said that the party was making efforts to elect a deserving and competent chairman of the Senate through consensus.

Talking to reporters after the launch ceremony of poetess Anmol Gauhar’s book at Lahore’s Qaddafi Stadium, Baloch said that Senator Raza Rabbani had created a positive impression through hard work, adding if all the parties agreed on him as Senate chairman, it would be a good decision.

However, he said, that Rabbani’s own party was not supporting him, although several other party leaders were in his favour.
