RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has impounded over 100 Chingchi rickshaws under its ongoing operation against unregistered rickshaws.
Talking to APP, RTA Secretary Khalid Yameen Satti said that the grand operation under the supervision of inspectors was launched last month and the RTA teams checked route permits, registration books, fitness certificates and other documents.
Over 100 rickshaws found plying on Raja Bazar, Fawara Chowk and Marrir Hassan roads without proper documents were issued challans and impounded, he said. The rickshaw drivers have been directed to come on roads with proper documents else strict action in accordance with the law would be taken against rules violators, he added.
Earlier, the owners of the rickshaws were directed to complete their documents till February 18, he said, adding that the operation is being conducted on daily basis and the violators are being imposed fines.
To a question about fare increase by the transporters after revised fuel prices, he said that so far, there was no revision in the fares of public transport and strict action would be taken against those fleecing the passengers. The transporters cannot increase fares on their own, he added.
Khalid Satti informed that RTA issued 1,040 challan tickets to PSVs during last month and also impounded 238 for overcharging, overloading and on other violations with fines amounting to Rs900,000.
