Italian Navy chief meets COAS to discuss regional security issues

RAWALPINDI: Chief of the Italian Navy Admiral Valter Girardelli called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Wednesday at the General Headquarters (GHQ).

During the meeting, regional security issues and matters of professional interest were discussed, said a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The visiting dignitary acknowledged the sacrifices and achievements of Pakistan Army in the fight against terrorism and efforts for bringing peace and stability in the region.

He also pledged to keep working for better relations between the two countries.

Chief of the Italian Navy Admiral Valter Girardelli visited Naval Headquarters (NHQ) in Islamabad and called on Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi.

Upon arrival at NHQ, the dignitary was received by the CNS. A smartly turned out contingent of Pakistan Navy clad in ceremonial dress presented the Guard of Honour. The visiting dignitary was then introduced to Principal Staff Officers at NHQ.

Later, Admiral Valter Girardelli called on the CNS in his office, where discussions on professional matters of mutual interest and bilateral naval collaboration were dilated upon. Various avenues of cooperation between the two navies were also focused. CNS Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi highlighted Pakistan’s commitment and contributions in the fight against terrorism, including participation of Pakistan Navy in Coalition Task Force (CTF) against piracy and maritime terrorism. Admiral Valter Girardelli highly appreciated role and contributions of Pakistan Navy in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

The visiting dignitary was brief about Pakistan Navy’s perspective on regional issues and its contributions towards peace and stability in the Indian Ocean. Later, Chief of Italian Navy also laid floral wreath at Shuhada Monument at NHQ.

In the second leg of his visit, Admiral Valter Girardelli is scheduled to visit Pakistan Navy Field Commands at Karachi. His visit is expected to strengthen the bilateral collaboration between the two navies.
