Why did MQM-P lawmaker try committing suicide?

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Shazia Javed’s medical tests came out negative for an overdose of any sort of sedatives, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Medical Superintendent Muhammad Anwar has said.

Earlier, it was reported on Monday that Shazia Farooq had tried to commit suicide; however, she was rushed to the hospital where she was treated with gastric irrigation.

According to the doctors, Shazia attempted suicide by excessively consuming sleeping pills but was now in stable condition.

It was also reported that after the news of the incident, MQM-P leadership had gone to visit her at the hospital.

While it is not yet confirmed why she attempted suicide, it may be noted that the MQM-P lawmaker was heavily criticised by the party leadership for allegedly voting for Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) backed candidate in the recently held Senate polls.

Following the Senate elections held on March 3, Shazia had released a video message admitting that she had violated party rules by casting her vote.

“I cast my vote without informing the party,” she had said.

She was among the party’s six MPAs of the Sindh Assembly who while defying party orders had reportedly voted for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

MQM-P chief Farooq Sattar had claimed that other than Shazia, five party members namely Naila Muneer, Heer Soho, Sameeta Afzal, Saleem Bandhani and Naheed Begum were served show-cause notices for violating party orders.

While speaking to the media outside the hospital, Shazia’s son Muhammad Farooq denied the allegations on his mother.

“She did not cast her vote. She had conflicts with Kamran Tessori bhai (brother) and Farooq Sattar bhai so, she gave an emotional statement in her interview after the election and everyone thought she had voted for the PPP.
