COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan government has imposed a nation-wide state of emergency over communal violence.
The move comes as a curfew was imposed in the city of Kandy on Monday after a Buddhist man was killed and a Muslim business was set on fire. There are fears the communal riots will spread throughout the country as the government has promised to take “stern action” against those instigating the violence.
Over 70 percent of the Sri Lankan population is Buddhist while Muslims comprise around 10 percent.
The Buddhist organisation Bodu Bala Sena has been accused for the violence.
