ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday resumed hearing on the petition against its judgement of 2006 which stopped the privatisation of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM).
The nine-member bench of the top court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar resumed hearing of the case.
The other members of the bench are Justice Dost Muhammad Khan, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Umar Ata Bandyal, Justice Faisal Arab, Justice Ejaz Afzal, Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, Justice Ejaz-ul-Hassan and Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan.
Earlier, Advocate Khalid Anwer, representing one of the petitioners, told the court that case was dismissed when he was on general adjournment. Upon this, the court ordered to resume the hearing on the petition.
The larger bench will take up the plea for the restoration of the review petition.
A section of lawyers feels that top court’s 2006 judgement on PSM should be revisited as the country is facing the loss of billions of rupees due to apex court’s verdict.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has approved privatisation of two large but loss-making institutions-Pakistan Steel Mill (PSM) and Pakistan International Airways (PIA). The premier granted the approval while heading the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Privatisation (CCoP) at Prime Minister’s office.
