Gutka, paan suprai injurious to human health: CJP

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar has remarked that gutka, paan and supari are injurious to human health.

The CJP gave these remarks while presiding over a 3-member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) during a case’s hearing pertaining to gutka, paan and supari filed by Rathore Paan Masala company against a high court decision here on Monday.

The counsel for the petitioner said that he was not advocating any gutka seller and that their products were registered.

Justice Umar Atta Bandial remarked there is no tobacco in paan masala.

The CJP replied: “Supari and gutka are injurious to health. You know how much court is serious about health issues. You cannot imagine how seriously the court is viewing health issues.”

The court was admitted for a preliminary hearing on the petitions filed by the private tobacco company and issued notices to the respondents.

The petitioner requested the court to give a date for hearing the case after which the CJP announced that the case will be heard after six months and adjourned the hearing of the case for an indefinite period.
