PPP delegation meets independent senators from Balochistan

QUETTA: Eight independent senators from Balochistan have pledged their support to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), party sources said on Sunday.

According to sources, a two-member delegation met with the elected senators in Balochistan and discussed with them in detail the political situation of Pakistan. The PPP delegation comprised of Faisal Karim Kundi and Dr Qayyum Soomro.

Sources said the delegation visited Quetta on the directives of PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari. They held a meeting with independent senators and Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) Abdul Quddus Bizenjo. By the end of the meeting, around eight senators assured their support for PPP.

Commenting on the issue, Dr Soomro said that additional support from senators of other political parties would also be sought, adding that this time around, the Senate chairman would once again be selected from PPP.

On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was also preparing to meet independently elected senators from Balochistan. PTI leader Jahangir Tareen contacted Anwarul Haq Kakar and congratulated the independent senators on their success.

It is pertinent to mention here that the PML-N and its allies had 48 seats in the Senate, while the total strength of PPP and other parties stood at 40. Under these circumstances, eight independent senators from Balochistan and four from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) could create disturbance in the political atmosphere when it comes to the issue of electing the chairman and deputy chairman of the Senate.
