ISLAMABAD: Minister of State and Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Chairperson Marvi Memon on Sunday launched a series of awareness programmes aimed at creating awareness among BISP beneficiary families and their children about civic education and their rights.

Renowned woman cartoonist Nigar Nazar had designed a unique board game for the children of the beneficiaries to educate them about their rights and roles in the larger perspective. The launch event of the board game was held at BISP Headquarters.

Memon said on the occasion that the idea behind this board game was to make our youth aware of their roles and rights as citizens of Pakistan. It would also educate them about the ways in which they could contribute positively towards the progress of the country, she added.

Women benefitting from the programme were invited to the event, along with their children, to create familiarity and interaction with the board game characters. Students of Roots International Schools also participated in the event to help the beneficiary children to learn the game while understanding its characters and their messages.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Memon announced that this new campaign would be replicated across Pakistan after the success of the pilot project in Islamabad. With the help of local educational institutions, this innovative board game would be launched in all the major cities of Pakistan, she added.

The BISP chairperson further said that with the support of academic institutions, we would help BISP beneficiaries and their children to get a good grasp on the key messages being shared by the game. The game included messages on child protection, nutrition, child labour, freedom of speech, rights of women in Islam, gender discrimination, respect of parents, early marriages, education, drugs, public harassment, savings and more, she added.

  1. Good initiative, BISP is a large platform with significant potential to delivery key messages on healthcare, nutrition, education and other social welfare aspects. However, there is need to introduce graduation modalities in BISP (e.g. consider the duration for poor families support, associate with livelihoods/ skills developments programme) this would allow for avoiding dependence and self development of the beneficiaries.
