SHARJAH: Some bookies who approached the cricketing stars in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2018 through social media apps were prevented from contact, sources inside Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed to media.
According to reports, these bookies had ties with an international fixing syndicate, and tried to corrupt the league by reaching a few players on WhatsApp and FaceTime.
As part of following the protocol, these unnamed players quickly informed the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) to prevent the attempt.
One PCB official admitted, “A couple of players were approached through social media apps but they did not respond to the bookie and reported the matter to us.”
He added that the board is watching out for culprits.
Last year’s edition of PSL suffered a spot-fixing scandal after which several players faced punishments. Khalid Latif and Sharjeel Khan were banned for failing to report the advances made by bookies.
On Wednesday, an anti-corruption tribunal of the PCB banned Shahzaib Hasan for one year with Rs 1 million fine for failing to disclose the advances.
