LAHORE: Former deputy prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) leader Chauadhry Parvez Elahi on Saturday said that those speaking about the respect of vote “insulted the assembly members by taking an oath from them for the Senate elections.”

“Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif during their ten-year rule in Punjab maintained a negligent attitude towards the assembly members and now have no faith in their MPs,” he said while adding that “elected members of the house were forced to take oath before a government deputy secretary.”

Speaking to media representatives outside the assembly chambers along with MNA Tariq Bashir Cheema and other party leaders, he said that an MPA told him that the “chief minister called him every five years and that too only to ask for vote.”

“In our tenure, every elected member was respected. If the chief minister will not honour his own members of the parliament, how and why would the bureaucracy respect them?” he questioned.

He further said Chaudhry Shujat Hussain and Moonis Elahi appeared before the National Accountancy Bureau (NAB) twice. “We respect all national institutions. Not only verbally, but duly from our hearts. Even if NAB summons us in future, we will fully cooperate,” he said.

Parvez said that the PML-Q during its tenure had done historical legislation in the Punjab Assembly for the welfare of poor and common people, and made laws which benefitted people of every area and field.

Replying to a question, he said those who claim that a ‘conspiracy was being hatched’, should tell the names of the so-called ‘conspirators’.

“We have always tried to unite the opposition, whether it is a sit-in or the assemblies, we have openly supported the PTI and protests of the opposition,” he said and added that Kamil Ali Agha played an effective role in the Senate as an opposition member.
