No signs of bacterial contamination in chicken sold across Punjab, SC told

LAHORE: The Supreme Court was informed by on Saturday that there are no signs of bacterial contamination of chicken meat sold across Punjab.

A three-member special bench of the top court was hearing a suo motu case regarding the sale and consumption of contaminated chicken meat.

The bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Manzoor Ahmad Malik and Justice Ijazul Ahsan was presented a report based on tests of chicken meat available at the various markets of the province.

Highlighting the findings of the report, the committee formed by the bench informed that the chicken meat samples were not found to be hazardous to human health, and that there were no signs of bacterial contamination of the meat.

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) director general assured the court that the authority will maintain the required standards by preparing their own standard operating procedure (SOP) within one month, adding that training will be provided to all staff so that poultry farms across the province can be visited.

The case hearing has been adjourned till March 9.

On February 10, the CJP had constituted a committee to carry out tests at various locations in Punjab to ascertain the presence of harmful chemicals in the meat.
