Mini zoo being developed in Taunsa

MULTAN: An amount of Rs124 million is being spent to develop a mini zoo in Taunsa Sharif of the Dera Ghazi Khan district. According to the officials, efforts are afoot to make the zoo functional by June 30.

Dera Ghazi Khan Divisional Wildlife Officer Sajjad Hussain on Friday said that according to a report from the buildings department, over 62 percent of the civil work has already been completed on the scheme.

He said that a sum of Rs94.35 million was released to the buildings department for the completion of civil work and rest for the wildlife department to acquire the required machinery, animals and other facilities for the zoo.

The mini zoo would comprise office buildings, servant quarters, parking space, cages for birds including a bird aviary, a bigger cage that would allow the birds to have enough space to fly, animal enclosures and many more, he added.

He further said the wildlife department was now engaged in arranging animals adding that initially only herbivorous animals were being arranged.

The officials also said that different zoo administrations and national park authorities were requested to send surplus animals to the Taunsa mini zoo upon its completion.

“The zoo will have animals including birds like parrots, ducks, ostrich, pheasants, all kinds of deer and monkeys,” he said.

It may be noted that Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif had ordered the establishment of the mini zoo in Taunsa Sharif on the request of MNA Sardar Amjad Farooq Khan Khosa.
