Combustible ‘Maulana Diesel’ gaffe puts TV channel in eye of the storm

A private news channel and supporters of Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman locked horns over social media on Saturday after the TV channel aired Fazl’s name as ‘Maulana Diesel’ in one of its programmes.

The programme, that was being held in the backdrop of the Senate elections, included a panel of experts who were discussing the probable outcome of the elections. When Fazlur Rehman was contacted on the phone for his point of view, his picture was mistakenly captioned as ‘Maulana Diesel’.

Netizens were quick to respond to the gaffe, with some making fun of the entire episode while others criticising the television channel for committing such a basic mistake.

Later the news channel also apologised for the mistake in a series of tweets and vowed to investigate the matter further in order to find the culprit who messed up the graphics.

One tweet read: “The organisation wholeheartedly apologises to Maulana Fazlur Rehman and his supporters.”

Another tweet read: “We will investigate the matter to find the culprit involved in the incident.”

“Geo News is extremely sorry for airing the wrong graphics under Fazlur Rehman’s name,” another tweet read.
