ISLAMABAD: Mere days after the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) reportedly directed for one million gas connections to be laid ahead of the general elections, the apex court has inquired if these can be issued on parliamentarians’ directives.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar while hearing the Bani Gala encroachment case, summoned the  Sui northern and southern gas companies managing directors next week.

The CJP also ordered a report to be presented regarding the policy of issuing connections, and the number of connections that have been issued in February 2018.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Ijazul Ahsan questioned the intention behind giving such an order with the general elections in tow.

The ruling party’s move seems to be aimed at marketing themselves to woo in voters as the party faces turbulent times in the form of Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification, both as the premier and the party’s chief since July 2017.

Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court (SC) rejected an application filed by the Sharif family seeking re-evaluation of wealth tax on their shares in multiple companies.
