Peace in Afghanistan has to be Pakistan’s priority

Once again there is a brave effort by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to hold a second Kabul Process Conference in the midst of unending terrorist attacks. President Ghani has offered the Talban the status of legitimate stakeholders, which marks a basic shift in the Afghan government’s policy which had so far categorised the Taliban as terrorists. The Taliban now have an opportunity to get their demands accepted legitimately through parliamentary means by joining the mainstream.

There is no denying that currently the Taliban have an upper hand while the Kabul government is on the back foot. What goes against the Taliban is that despite controlling large swathes of territory they are still in no position to capture Kabul thus establishing their hold on entire Afghanistan. They are convinced that the international community will not allow this to happen. This explains why on Monday resiling from their earlier demand that the US end its “occupation” and accept the Taliban’s right to form a government, the Taliban have offered direct talks to the US to bring peace.

President Ghani has offered Pakistan to hold government to government talks, saying that he is willing to forget the past. The offer should be accepted by Pakistan as an end to violence in the neighbouring country would promote peace and security in Pakistan itself. What is more with the Tliban part of the political process with the active help of Pakistan, this would ensure that India does not use the country against Pakistan.

A proactive role in bringing the Taliban in the peace process would take Pakistan a step further to its aim to “enhance economic partnerships with friendly countries in the region and beyond”, a goalpost set by the National Security Committee on Tuesday. What is more it would break the present barriers to the extension of the CPEC into Central Asia through Afghanistan.

Pakistan should meanwhile keep the door for talks open with India also to be able at some stage to get settled some of the key disputes with its eastern neighbour.

    – What did Pakistan do to Afghanistan that this bigoted fool is giving such remark “He’s willing to forget the past”, this old senile man has lost his sanity. Probably due to all the bacha-baaz culture and corrupt warlords in Afghanistan strangling one another in a power struggle for power to control Afghanistan after the Americans leave. Listen, foolish Ashraf, instead of blaming others learn to accept your incompetence and set a good example by doing things properly. Disgusting people, the hoax about the deputy governor of Afghanistan’s Kunar province goes missing in Pakistan only to realize it was planned out political move. Shame on such people, kick these people out and don’t even offer them a chance to set foot in Pakistan. Government of Pakistan wake up! Stupid old people and politicians ruining this country…
