RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has allowed women to serve in the armed forces for the first time.

Riyadh, Mecca, al-Qassim and Medina are the only provinces from where interested candidates can apply this week. There are a number of requirements that must be fulfilled including, but not limited to being Saudi nationals, having at least a high-school diploma and being between the age of 25-35. In addition, women who are married to non-Saudi nationals cannot be allowed and must have male guardians living in the same province where they are deployed.

It is not yet clear if they would be assigned active combat duties.
