Samina Baig appointed UNDP goodwill ambassador

LAHORE: Samina Baig, the first Pakistani woman to climb Mount Everest, has been appointed as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) goodwill ambassador for Pakistan.

As the UNDP goodwill ambassador for the country, she will lead the efforts to create awareness and partnerships around the UN’s development goals regarding environmental protection, women empowerment and climate change.

Samina Baig was born in Gilgit-Baltistan and climbed the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest, at the age of 22. She had also climbed the seven summits by the time she turned 23. She currently heads the Pakistan Youth Outreach Foundation which works to encourage the youth to take part in outdoor activities.

UN’s Resident Coordinator in Pakistan Neil Buhne said that as the UNDP goodwill ambassador for Pakistan, she will work on highlighting the issues that are important in shaping Pakistan’s future.
