Protection of basic human rights is duty of judges, says LHC CJ

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Yawar Ali said on Monday that protection of basic human rights is the duty of judges.

He was addressing the two-day Asia Pacific Environmental Justice Conference being held with the collaboration of Judicial Academy and LHC.

Justice Ali asserted the environmental issue is a serious problem for the whole region and urged the government and concerned authorities to take concrete measures on the emergency basis.

“The role of LHC and Supreme Court is critical in this regard,” he added.

The chief justice further asserted that proper rules are present to provide a healthy environment and stressed on the resolution of environmental issues.

“Pakistan passed Environment Protection Act in 1992 and conducted Bhurban Environment Conference in 2012 where declaration for the betterment of environment was issued,”  he mentioned.

The conference was attended by UN Special Representative on Human Rights and Environment John Kox along with representatives from Vietnam, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Afghanistan and other countries.
