BEIJING: The Communist Party of China has proposed to remove the clause that the president and vice president of the country can only serve for a maximum of two turns in office.

The move is widely expected to further entrench the current President Xi Jinping, now considered to be the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao Zedong.  The removal of the clause will allow him to serve well beyond 2023.

“The Communist Party of China Central Committee proposed to remove the expression that the President and Vice-President of the People’s Republic of China “shall serve no more than two consecutive terms” from the country’s Constitution,” said the state-controlled Xinhua news agency on Sunday.
