–PML-Q leaders submit proposals for transparent election
LAHORE: An 8-member delegation of the European Union (EU) called on the Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujat Hussain and former deputy prime minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi at their residence on Sunday.
In light of the rigging that took place in 2013 general elections, PML-Q leaders put forward proposals for holding fair and transparent elections in the future.
Senator Kamil Ali Agha, Dr Khalid Ranjha, Moonis Elahi, Salik Hussain and Rizwan Mumtaz Ali were also present during the meeting.
Chaudhry Shujat Hussain and Chaudhry Parvez Elahi reiterated the stance of 22 political parties and said that in 2013 general elections, returning officers (RO) had a huge role in the rigging that took place. They expressed hope for the next general elections and said that they expected the European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) to fully cooperate with them and to facilitate them.
Members of the delegation, while discussing the political situation in the context of the next general elections, said that the EU delegation was holding meetings with the heads of political parties in Pakistan and wanted to know their views regarding the upcoming elections and would issue a report ahead of general elections in which they would review the political situation. The delegation said that it was their routine before the elections and previously they had also published reports regarding 2002, 2008 and 2013 general elections.
EU delegation included Nicolay Paus, Ann Vanhout, Jean Costedoat, Hans Weber, Hannah Theresa Roberts, Colm Vincent Fahy, Pawel Kryztof and Svante Torgny Yngrot.
